SWEDISH
VALLHUND CLUB OF AMERICA
Suggested Guidelines
These guidelines are established in accordance with the
objectives of the Swedish Vallhund Club of America. It is presented as a
guideline for the use of the SVCA members when buying, breeding, selling
and exhibiting Swedish Vallhund.
General Membership:
1. Members will abide by the Constitution and By-Laws of the Swedish
Vallhund Club of America and the rules of the American Kennel Club.
2. Members will consider the best interest of the breed and the Club.
3. Members will maintain the best possible standards of excellence in
canine health, cleanliness, and care.
4. Swedish Vallhund owners should encourage public education, represent
the breed honestly to prospective buyers and help people to make informed
canine-related decisions.
BREEDERS: Brood Bitch Owner and Stud Dog Owner
5.All advertising shall be honest and truthful and in no way
misrepresentative, fraudulent or misleading. Advertising should give full
disclosure of any information on the history and genetics of the
individual and the breed when requested.
6. Breeding should be done with the purpose of improving the breed and not
for profit. The ultimate goal of the responsible breeder should be to
improve the breed by producing attractive, healthy puppies with good
temperament, whether for pet or show.
7. Breeders should have a basic knowledge of genetics, the breed, dog
breeding in general and the specific faults and virtues of their chosen
genetic lines. They should also be aware of potential health problems
associated, both with the breed itself, and the specific lines. This is to
encourage improvement of the breed by using top quality stock along with
extensive researched knowledge.
8. Encourage the x-raying and OFA/PennHip certification against hip
dysplasia and CERF certification against eye disorders. As well as any
other testing for health disorders directly related to the breed.
9. All breeding stock must have registration papers, be in good health and
of sound temperament and structure. Each should be free from communicable
diseases, inheritable diseases and/or a disqualifying faults (as described
in the standard of the breed). Males that are monorchids or cryptorchids
should not be used for breeding nor should dogs on medication intended to
alter the dog's physical or mental condition.
10.Dogs and bitches should not be used for breeding if they have a pattern
of producing offspring with a serious genetic health fault (i.e.
blindness; cleft palate; heart problems; etc).
11.Members should not consider breeding a litter unless they are prepared
to keep the puppies for as long as it takes to suitably place each puppy
in a proper home.
12.Members should take LIFETIME responsibility to insure that Swedish
Vallhunds of their breeding are cared for in a safe and healthy
environment.
13.The breeder of a rescued Vallhund who is a member of the SVCA shall,
upon notification, provide for the Vallhund's care..
14. No bitch shall be bred more than twice out of every three seasons. Nor
should one be bred prior to eighteen months of age. All bitches to be
bred, regardless of age but especially considering the older bitch, must
be in good health. A bitch is only to be bred to only one male during one estrus
cycle.
15. No member of the Club will provide stud service, wholesale or sell
Swedish Vallhunds to any pet shop, puppy broker, puppy mill, or other
commercial enterprises.
16. Stud service should be offered only to bitches whose owners adhere to
the Clubs guidelines and to refuse stud service to any bitch the member
considers in poor health. A stud contract should be understood and signed
by both parties.
17.Stud owners are responsible for puppies produced by their studs.
Therefore it is recommended they verify the bitch owner is a responsible
owner and breeder. Breeders of litters are responsible for puppies
produced by their bitches. Therefore, it is recommended that the breeders
verify that their purchasers of puppies will be responsible dog owners who
will provide proper homes and care.
18. Stud owner shall allow a repeat service to a bitch who failed to
conceive, given that bitch and stud are in good health and that time and
place are mutually convenient for owners.
SALES
19.Breeders should make themselves available to the purchaser after the
sale has been consummated, to help with education, grooming and other care
questions as well as solving behavioral problems.
20.Breeders should refuse to sell to or to recommend unethical breeders,
nor should they sell to any buyer where they have reason to believe that
the puppy or dog will not be provided proper care and environment.
21.All dogs sold shall be at least eight (8) weeks of age, in good health,
immunized and free from communicable diseases. Buyers will be given record
of all shots, wormings, and pedigree. Complete and accurate records must
be kept; registration papers must be passed on to the owners of each dog.
Non-breeding contract may be retained by mutual agreement in writing.
22.Breeders should recommend future immunizations and worming schedules,
as well as ways to deal with various health and/or behavioral problems
that might occur. Breeders should also inform new owners of any health
clearances that have been performed on one or both of the parents.
Recommendations should also be given for proper nutrition, socialization,
and health care.
23.Breeders should urge all buyers to have the newly purchased dog
examined by a licensed veterinarian within 72 hours of receipt.
24.Encourage the use of a receipt and sales contract which is clearly
understood and covers health guarantees and agreements signed by both
buyers and sellers.
25.All pet quality dogs, or dogs with a serious fault, should be
recommended to be spayed or neutered and sold on a non-breeding contract.
26.Contracts should contain contingencies regarding any puppy sold as a
show prospect which subsequently develops a congenital or disqualifying
defect.
Suggested clauses are:
a) replaced by the breeder with another show prospect with the original
dog spayed or neutered, or
b) the money refunded and the dog returned to the breeder, or
c) the buyer's money refunded to the extent of the difference between the
price of a pet quality and a show quality prospect from the same or
similar litter, with the buyer retaining the dog.
27.Any violations will be brought to the Board's attention and dealt with
as stated in the Constitution and By-Laws of the Club.
