Note: After each show, the Judge is to submit a
report stating his/her general, overall
impression of the breed as shown that day, per standard. The Judge may make
additional
individual comments but must address the general, overall quality of the group of
SV's at
that show. Judges express only their opinions as to their view of
the dog's performance
that day only. Dogs, like judges and handlers and other people have good days and
off days. One dog that show as exceptional one day may show as OK on another. Also, no dog
is perfect
(as are none of us). A show dog simply has the qualifications to meet the standard
without
any disqualifying faults. Breeders strive to reduce flaws and improve overall.
Judge: Anita Whitmarsh, Sweden
Dear Members:
I cannot begin to tell you how pleased I was to be invited to judge at the
American Rare Breed Assoc. "Cherry Blossom Classic" and of course
the highlight being, judging the Swedish Vallhunds.
I was pleasantly surprised with the quality. Different types, yes. But that
is not a bad thing on the contrary, if within the standard; it will do the
breed good. It will give everyone a chance to "do good" and not feel
disappointed, if their dogs do not look like everybody elses. But, as said,
it has to be within the boundaries of the standard. After all, it mainly boils
down to your interpretation of the said standard.
Personally I dont like the American way of handling.
These dogs couldnt
be further from the "glamour parlor" and I feel they should be handled
loosely and naturally. Not strung up, not trimmed and not newly bathed (remember the harsh
coat); but I suppose, as the saying goes, "when in
Rome, do as the Romans". I certainly had a warm welcome of the few
that was there and I received a lovely present. Thank you!
They wanted to know so much and I hope I could answer some of it, but
I would like to add-Dont put yourself down. None of you are after all
stupid and I think you know plenty. In fact, the serious breeder will listen
to more than one person plus their own common sense. So, with my
critique written below, I want you to remember, this is my opinion only.
Who is to say I am always right. I would also like to add that all dogs
were untrimmed and what lovely teeth and bites all had. But watch out
with some soft coats, quite a few had it. But on the positive side, many
had lovely undercoats.
Critique
3-6 Months Bitches
Fromars Dragon Lady
Puppy of excellent quality with good size and plenty of bone without being
overdone. She gave an excellent overall impression. Such good angulation, topline, and
rear end. Well shaped head, which was held well. Well-set ears, good markings and a very
"perky" temperament. As with all babies one must remember their age and they
alter both for the better and worse very rapidly. She moved very parallel and I find her
promising. Unfortunately had a slight blue spot in her lovely dark eye.
Graadtres Silver Streak av Fromar
Same remarks as above although she is fraction smaller (Not Small). An
absolutely beautiful expression with very dark eyes. Very good coat texture. Lovely
temperament. Promising. Head could turn out better than above.
Fromars Red Sonja av Graadtre
A very pleasing overall picture. Lovely rich color (red). Lively and
alert. Moved well, if not parallel, good rib & slightly soft in pastern. Could have
tighter feet. Excellent conformation and angulation. I hope her front holds. But
shes being judged on the day. Good size and bone. Terrific mover and showgirl.
Am. Bred Dog
Caval Tor Gaelen
Gives a very good overall impression. Two years old with good bone
and size. Excellent neck and topline, good croup, well set tail. Excellent thigh with good
width and strength. Well let down hock and bent stifle. Well sprung rib, good forechest,
well laid shoulder. Feet turns out slightly, pasterns could be stronger. Well-shaped head,
alert look. Moves a fraction close behind. Has a good drive in spite of being slightly
restricted. Topline could be stronger when moving. Good coat; nice temperament.
Open Dog
Caval Tor Taliesen
A slightly unfinished dog with excellent bone. Good size. He has the
maturing in front of him. Well-shaped chest, slightly long in loin. Well developed thigh.
Head of good proportions with a strong wedge. Alert look. Hocks are slightly out when
moving hence a little close at back feet. A good sidegait with drive (one should remember
how important a good strong rear end is for quick acceleration and when the dog wants to
do turns and jumps). This dogs main fault is a row of slightly raised
vertebraes. In other words, gives a slight convex (raised) topline. Nice
temperament. Good coat texture.
9-15 Months Bitch
Fromars Cactus Flower
A decent sized bitch. No question of her sex. Very good proportions.
Should not be longer in loin. Chest could be deeper and better sprung ribs. Hence her
looking wider at elbows than she is. A little "Chippendale" in front (when she
matures and fills out this will be less noticeable). Very good angulation at rear.
Excellent neck and topline holds her well-shaped feminine head well. Lovely alert look in
her very dark eyes. Good textured coat what was left on her. Excellent true marking. Moves
out well. Temperament very good.
Best of Breed
Ch. Jonricker Mr. Magoo
A large masculine dog, perhaps, a fraction only, coarse. Never the
less, gives a nice overall impression with fairly decent proportions. Slightly long coat.
He has a short upper arm, which is apparent in his movements, as he does not particularly
stride out (cannot) in front. But he makes up for it at the rear end, which is strong and
well developed. Very good neck and topline. A very good wedged shaped head. Pleasant look.
Moves parallel and true. Coming and going. Coat o.k. Nice temperament.
Ch. Jonricker Ivan the Terrible
Again, a large male. Many of the remarks from Ch. Jonricker Mr.
Magoo fit this dog. This one does not have such a strong pastern and feet are slightly
long (I see they are related). Liked his head, look and well placed ears. He paddles a bit
in front when coming at you. This dog also moves a little "tripping" in front.
Shows himself really well. A nice old type, which you saw more in the past than you do
now.
Ch. Graadtres Balder at Fromar
An eighteen-month-old male. A well bodied animal. Lovely bone and
size. Such good proportions. Excellent topline and rear end. Such good hock angulation and
turn of stifle. Excellent spring of rib and forechest. Looks as he has sloping croup, but
not so, he has no tail at all and then gives this impression. Well-laid shoulder. Strong
pastern, good feet. To finish this excellent dog he should have had a much more masculine
head. (Not so short in scull and muzzle would be an advantage). What makes him look
a bit stuffy in this department is probably his slightly short neck. Having said all this,
the shape of the head is very good. He has a rich coat, which need not be softer or
longer. A lovely undercoat. Moves extremely well. I was thrilled to find out some of my
lines were behind him.
Ch. Pacquesa Waltz
Next was a totally naked bitch. (Has she
no shame!) Joking aside, she is of good size and proportions. Could have slightly more
bone. A little short upperarm. Shoulder could be a fraction tighter. Good rear end with
good angulation. Very good neck and topline. Good forechest. Lovely head, expression and
excellent markings. Coat texture good even if there wasnt much of it. A little
"Chippendale" in front. Moves very positive and balanced. Lovely temperament. A
pleasing bitch. Well handled.
Ch. Jonricker Minnie Mouse
A bitch of good proportions. Gives a balance impression. Excellent
type, excellent topline and rear end. Excellent turn of stifle and hock angulation. Good
pastern & feet. Shoulder could be a fraction tighter. Well-sprung ribs of good length.
Enough forechest. Well-shaped wedged head of good proportions. Alert, intelligent look.
Moves fairly parallel. Feet a fraction close at front when moving. Her side gait is
outstanding and holds her topline well. Shows herself to an advantage. Good coat and
markings.
Ch. Jonricker Lady Gretchen
Good sized bitch. You know shes a girl. A very good reach of
neck and topline. An excellent rear end. Short upperarm but shoulder lays well. Slightly
long fee and would look better if claws were cut. Good spring of rib. Good length of
chest, enough forechest. A good head with very good markings. Alert look. Excellent side
gait with good front reach and very good drive. She dips slightly behind her withers
Ch. Rosewoods Happiness is at Fromar
An excellent type. A little English in style. 18 month. Gives a very
balanced look. Just the right bone for her size. Very good reach of neck and topline.
Would like a fraction better hock angulation and turn of stifle. Good forechest and well
sprung ribs of good length. Excels in loin. Lovely head with a "perky look" and
dark eyes. Excellent coat and markings. Could have tighter elbows but like Fromars
Cactus Flower, needs time to fill in there. Shes a little "Chippendale"
also, but not too disturbing. Moves with good purpose. Well shown and handled. Lovely
temperament.
In the line for Best of Breed I thought the dogs could have
come from Sweden or England. Same typical variation in type, sizes, etc
I dont
think that is a disaster, although we must not wander too much from breed type and
its characteristics and I dont think it did.
