The American Kennel Club July 31, 2006 The Swedish Vallhund Club of America (SVCA) continues to move forward in its quest to achieve full American Kennel Club (AKC) recognition for the Swedish Vallhund (SV). This is our report for July, 2006. During the past six months, we have been engaged in the following: working with the AKC regarding requirements in regards to the Illustrated Standard website for the SV ongoing general education to the public regarding the SV ongoing judge education regarding the SV completion of our 2nd AKC sanctioned "B" Match working with herding trials for the AKC with herding tests for the SV showing SVs in Misc. Conformation in the AKC forwarding to the AKC on 5/11/06, a petition asking that the SV be considered for full recognition. This is after completion of almost a year in the AKC-Misc Class. Ms. O’Neil has informed us that she will make a presentation, on behalf of the SVCA, for full recognition of the SV to the AKC board at their August, 2006, meeting with a vote from that board by October, 2006. Membership As of July, 2006, the SVCA has 124 members in 34 states. There are 100 households. Membership in the SVCA has remained steady with growth and minor fluctuations. The SVCA was established in 1987, with a small number of members. Membership stayed low until our reorganization in 1998, at which time we had 13 recorded members. Since then, growth in Club membership has had a similar growth pattern as the rise of SVs in the USA. From 13 members in 1998, we now stand at members. The SVCA also has a few members from countries outside of the USA . These members are not listed in the counts given to the AKC . Our members continue to be active in participating in AKC shows across the country in the Misc. Class. Many members have notified the SVCA Contact Person to the AKC on their participation. Our Breeders List has also grown. Each of these breeders has played a very important part in our goal to preserve and protect the SV . They work to improve their breeding programs. Many have added new stock to their lines to better preserve and promote our SVs in the USA . SVs The report from Christine Weisse of the AKC states that, as of July, 2006, there are 643 SVs registered in the USA . Using our private SV Worldwide Database, it can be seen that SVs are in at least forty-one (41) states. The number of states with SVs may be higher; however, the SVCA does not have access to the current AKC SV database of 643 dogs. In the data section is a chart which graphically shows the growth of the SV in the USA . From one SV in 1984 to 643 SVs in 2006 indicates marked growth. This growth has been steady and constant. The period in 1998 when the Club reorganized to the current date indicates the most dramatic growth. Committees Our committees continue to be active. Among them: Illustrated Standard Committee: The Judges’ Pictorial, published in January, has been well received and distributed by the Judges ’Education Chairman and others. (It is available in downloadable form on our Web site for all who would use this sort of material.) We have been in contact with a Roz Kraus at the AKC about the preparation of a Swedish Vallhund Illustrated Standard page on the AKC Web site. This page will go up once we have been officially recognized as an "AKC" breed. Following examples of other breeds already in position, we are currently seeking out perhaps ten additional pictures; and we are working on the text of some brief explanatory comments to go along with our full official Standard. (from quarterly report) Awards Committee: continues to work with members to have them be aware of internal Club recognition for various achievements of our SVs in all fields. Regional Committee: continues to respond to inquiries regarding the SV and the SVCA in all sections of the country Rescue: continues to be active and has reported that, thankfully, no SVs required rescue services during this period Education: a steady number of requests, approximately 25 per quarter, continue to be received for information regarding the SV and the SVCA . All general education documents have been reviewed and revised where needed to provide insightful and accurate information to the general public. These have been distributed to membership and are available on the Club website www.swedishvallhund.org In addition to the above information regarding the Education Committee, SVCA members have volunteered to participate in educational program to promote the SV to the general public. January 14 & 15, 2006: Meet the Breed at the Eukanuba Invitational Championship Show in Tampa, FL. A booth was set up with the theme of "The Versatile Swedish Vallhund" and the presentation included educational handouts, coloring pages, A Viking Warrior scene backdrop, pictures and a digital slide show of SVs in various types of events, ie, herding, agility, therapy, SAR etc. Participants were, Cheryl Rolfe, Marie Brown, Kerstin Ottmar, Dorie and Gary Michele. March, 2006: Meet the Breed: The SVCA Banner and documents were presented at the Detroit Kennel Club’s Cobo Hall Bench Show in Detroit, MI on March 18, 19, 2006. The DKC provided a prime space in a special ring right next to the AKC booth for presentation of the "New AKC Breed: The Swedish Vallhund." Cheryl Albert and Gail Smyka were organizers and presenters Almost 300 sheets of SVCA information & coloring sheets were passed out over the two days, with additional hundreds of people stopping by to ask questions and see the 4 SVs . A PowerPoint Presentation on the SV was created by Gail Smyka and available. There was a 50minute presentation with a question and answer period and hands-on the dogs for the audience. This DKC show is one of only 6 bench shows in the USA. Prior to this show, the area/national newspaper, The Detroit Free Press, invited Gail Smyka and her dogs to a special gathering. From this, photos were taken and a feature written up and printed in the YAK section for young readers....a two page color spread on March 16, 2006. Another SV article was printed in the Detroit Free Press on May 21, 2006. Other SV articles were printed in the Macomb Daily, The Traverse City News and the Charlevoix News. These papers are in Michigan. July 23, 2006: Meet the Breed at the Reliant Dog Shows of San Antonio, TX. Organizing the event and passing out literature and breed standard information were Michele Pfeil and Lynette Lane. They had 3 SVs present for people to meet. Judge Education: This committee continues to be active in promoting an understanding of the SV and the SV standard to judges. The following information was provided by Rose Martino in her quarterly report: Feb. 11th-I presented the breed at the Dog Judges of America seminars in New York City in conjunction with Westminster. Fifty packets were passed out, including the new tri-fold. Debbie Harper was generous for supplying the "hands on" part with her dog at 8:30 AM.
Feb.28th-At the Mason Dixon Dog Judges meeting in Frederick, MD I presented the breed and passed out 15 packets. I used my own dogs this time. March 18th-We drove to Louisville, KY for the group of seminars put on by the kennel club. Twenty packets were distributed. Louise McCombs drive down from home to provide the dogs and pick up her new puppy from me. The puppy was the hit of the seminar.
March 24th- I flew to Fort Worth to be part of a group of seminars. I passed out 25 packets. Mary Conner very efficiently set up having dogs of various ages for the "hands on" part.
In addition I have informally discussed the breed with many judges, especially one doing the Herding Group and Misc. classes. To date I have prepared and distributed over 120 packets that include the tri-fold, breed history, breed standard, a comparison with the Elkhound and a contrast of the Vallhund and the Corgis. January 28, 2006: Dog Expo, Allentown, PA: Presentation of rare breeds by Mrs. Tuff, a long time rare breed judge. The SV was one of eight (8) breeds presented. Participant: Rose Martino. Materials and standard were passed out to judges as well as the general public. Newsletter Committee : members have received their newsletter in a timely manner. As soon as the newsletter is published, a copy is sent directly to the AKC by the Newsletter Committee. Shows: The SVCA held its 2nd AKC sanctioned "B" Match on 5/20/06, Judge: Alice Inman. The match was held in Austin, TX and was chaired by Mary Carter who was assisted by Cindy Kingsley and Michelle Pfeil. We had 13 SVs,(six dogs; 7 bitches) participating. We offered classes in 6 -9 months puppy; 9 -12 month puppy; novice dog and bitch; open dog and bitch; altered dog and bitch and Junior Showmanship. The catalogue and flyer for this event are included with this report. Our SVCA National Independent Specialty, held in conjunction with the AKC Tulsa Area Cluster Shows – November 1 - 5, 2006, promises to be a well attended affair. Show schedule includes independent specialty conformation, obedience, herding, rally, seminars, and great AKC Cluster show events as well. The current write-up for this event is included in this report. An updated SVCA Major Events form is included with this report. One of our members, Nancy Tousignant, has prepared a draft of a premium list for her Willamette Valley Herding Club. This event will include both herding tests and trials. Although our SV currently may only participate in Herding Tests, this information provides an example of our Club members expertise in managing events as well as their willingness to not only participate in events but to plan them. Corrections from last report: In the January, 2006, report to the AKC the purpose of the Judge’s Pictorial pamphlet, which was completed by the SVCA Illustrated Standard Committee, was misstated. The pamphlet was developed for SVCA use by this SVCA committee. It was not created for AKC purposes. Contents of this report: I. The report itself; membership and SV data; breeders list; major event form II. Board minutes since last report of 1/06 III. Treaurer’s report and Committee Reports since 1/06 IV. Flyers and report of 2nd AKC sanctioned "B" Match of 5/20/06 V. Draft Premium List and report of N. Tousignant re: Herding Test/Trials VI. Letters to SVCA members VII. Updated Education documents and newspaper articles re: SV VIII. Information re: SVCA National Specialty, 2006 Conclusion: We believe that this report shows a continued drive and commitment by our members individually and our Club as a whole, to participate with their SVs; to generate interest and provide information to the public sector re: the SV as well as specifically needed information to Judges; to continue the growth of both the SV and the SVCA . Our goal continues to be full recognition for the Swedish Vallhund. If there is anything else we can do to help us achieve this goal and promote this recognition process for the Swedish Vallhund, please let us know. Respectfully,
