Hi, Everyone.
I wanted to just put up a note about what we'll be doing and what's what
as I know it.
Once the official note from the club regarding my appointment goes to AKC,
our Secretary will be working with me to secure copies of all materials we
need to send in to AKC. Some of these materials, I will read and make an
analysis. This full report plus files will be sent into AKC. The basic
report will also appear both in our newsletter and on the website.
Information going to AKC will include, but is not limited to:
board minutes
committee reports
membership lists
list of households (if we have 2 people in a household,
only one counts for a household count per AKC)
a map showing the numbers of members in each
state and an analysis of this
election results
statement of the club's intent and desire for AKC recognition
and more..........
Once AKC receives our information, to be sent by certified mail, I will
contact Elaine Dorwart and see if there is anything else we can do to
upgrade our status. I will keep members informed by:
---reports to the SVCA Board
---reports in the newsletter and website
I reiterate the request of the previous contact
person: that individuals do not contact Elaine Dorwart or other AKC
persons directly regarding the status of our breed's recognition. AKC will
communicate only with the appointed contact person. All information
going to and from the AKC regarding official club activity and status
needs to be channeled through this one person. AKC is a large organization
and this is a standard business principle.
Now, I have to find out what's new in requirements
and such, but let me state what I know from the past:
--We needed at least 300 dogs. We had attained this by 12/01.
--We needed at least 100 households. We have now attained this.
When I was the contact person in the past, I had been told that once we
attained these two goals, AKC would BEGIN to consider our request and then
make contact with us. They would then review documents and processes with
us and help us in various arenas, PRIOR to our going into Miscellaneous
Class. When AKC felt the time was right, THEY would initiate sending out a
secret ballot regarding our wish to join AKC to each club member (per
membership list) and they would do the count and notify us of
results.
There are many FSS breeds who are also applying for
AKC recognition. Some of these have been with FSS much longer than we
have. We cannot make AKC move us ahead or faster than AKC chooses to move
us. We can only keep them informed and keep our SV and our SVCA in the
forefront of their thinking by providing updates to them and continuing to
let them know our intent.
There are things you can do to help. Here are some:
1. It will be imperative that we not only keep the
100 households..........but grow. Please make sure to RENEW your
membership in a timely fashion. Please encourage other SV owners and
potential SV people to go through the club process to become members.
Please inform our Membership Chairperson, Bonnie Conner, bkc1946@aol.com
of your willingness to be a SV contact person in your area. It is vitally
important that we have persons willing to do some PR with their SV and
introduce their SV to interested persons.
2. If you have ANY fun match or dog activity in your
area which involves the SV, please let the SVCA know, preferably the
Secretary ( bkc1946@aol.com ) who is
the person who will be working closely with me and send me copies for AKC.
Write up a little report and send it along. AKC really wants to see
these things as an indicator of a club's growth and interest. I'll work
with the Secretary to make a little "Activity Report" which will
be available to you.
3. Pass out material on the SV. Use the fold-up page
in your membership packet....it is intended as informational material to
be xeroxed and passed out. The Education Committee is looking at updates
of this............but use this for now. Tell the Education Chairperson ( svcags@comcast.net
) in a note where you are passing out info....we need this info.
4. As we grow as a club and set up regional matches
and shows, please get from the Secretary ( bkc1946@aol.com
)or Show Chairperson ( fromar@aol.com
)the Judge's Form. Have the Judge either complete two copies (it is short)
or one and copy it. Send it to the club or the judge can send his/her copy
directly to AKC...the address is on there. This is a simple form given to
us by AKC for AKC use. Anytime there is a show, we need to have the judge
complete it and send it in, with a copy to the club. This will be helpful
to the club.
5. If you do any presentations regarding the SV to
your community or dog clubs, write up a short report and send it to the
Secretary.................these are really needed.
We all need to get involved in the above to help our
presentations to AKC.
I am interested in hearing your viewpoints and will
try to post updates as soon as I have them. Full updates and reports go to
AKC from me at least two times a year, though I should have other contacts
throughout the year with AKC. Since our next newsletter is due in March, I
ask that you share this update with other members who don't have Internet
access. I hope to have the REAL update for the March Newsletter.
I truly love this wondrous breed and am dedicated to
the success of our club and its goals of protecting, preserving and
promoting the Swedish Vallhund.
Thank you again for this opportunity to serve you.
Sincerely,
Gail Smyka
