To: SVCA Members,

Below you will find my final report as AKC contact person for the SVCA. I have been assured that my last report and the interim AKC report of 10/06 will be printed in the next newsletter. In the interim report, you will find all of the persons we have to thank for getting us to this point.  As for me, I wish to thank you for the honor of serving you and the trust you placed in me in regards to this function. Thank you.

 June 21, 2007

This report includes information covering the Swedish Vallhund Club of America (SVCA) through June 20, 2007.

Currently the AKC reports 715 Swedish Vallhunds registered in the USA with 712 of them having three-generation pedigrees.

Enclosed are our Membership and Household Lists as well as the AKC requested USA map indicating members-in states.

Also enclosed are updated SVCA Board minutes and Committee reports and an updated Contact List.

Our Illustrated Standard /Pictorial Committee, chaired by D. Harper, completed our work with the AKC website material and is viewable on the AKC website under the Swedish Vallhund, Judges Study Guide.  This work was completed on November 28, 2006 and was inadvertently omitted in our last report.

 General and Judge Education:
Rosemary Martino, our Chairperson of the Judge Education Committee continues to be active in having Club-authorized seminars regarding the SV. She is planning seminars at the Herding Institute in Pennsylvania in August, 2007 and in Houston at the DJAA in July, 2007.
Another Club-authorized judge seminar was made by Louise McCombs in April, 2007, in Littleton, Colorado.

Our SVCA Member, Kerstin Ottmar presented her own judge education seminar on April 25, 2007, to the Northeast Dog Judges Study Group.

Our SVCA Members, Mary Carter and Kerstin Ottmar, participated in promoting the SV at the AKC Eukanuba Invitational Dog Show December 2 – 3, 2006 in Long Beach, California.

In other SVCA News:

  • The AKC Club Relations Department has granted us permission to hold an A match as a requirement before we are allowed to hold licensed independent specialties where the SVCA can give championship points.
  • A Regional Specialty is to be held June 30, 2007, at Wrentham, MA, in conjunction with the Hockamock Kennel Club Dog Show. A Canine Eye Clinic will be held.
  • A Regional Specialty is to be held June 30 – July 1, 2007, in Loveland, CO.
  • The National SVCA Specialty is to be held October 14, 2007 in West Friendship, MD. Our judge will be Mrs. Francine W. Schwartz of Lake Forest, IL. We will have all allowed regular and non regular classes plus sweeps for puppies and  veterans. We will hold our General Membership Meeting as well as a Canine Eye Clinic.
  • To show how we have grown: In 1998, when the SVCA reorganized, there were 13 members listed. Today, there are 123, with 100 households. We have members in 37 states and SVs in at least 40 states, given our membership and the Worldwide SV database. At the end of 1998, we had 237 SVs in the USA today we have 715 SVs AKC registered. In 1998, there were 5 or 6 SV breeders, today, the SVCA has 22 breeders on its breeders list.

As this is the last report to be filed by the SVCA prior to full AKC recognition of the Swedish Vallhund as of  June 27, 2007, we wish to thank the AKC for all of your help and support these past years. We realize that we have work to do; however, we are both proud and thankful for what we have achieved.  We feel that the Swedish Vallhund is a wonderful dog and a truly great entry into the AKC Herding Group. We pledge to continue to preserve and promote our wonderful breed while fully participating in all AKC activities.

Thank you.

Respectfully,

Gail M. Smyka
