AKC Update for 12/01
AKC Update for 2001 Below is found the year end report given to AKC/FSS. They request this so as to keep updated as to our progress in regards to our goal of being recognized by AKC. We have met the minimum standard of 300 registered Swedish Vallhunds. As of 11/01, the club was told that we have 343 dogs registered. AKC has stated that all of our Pedigrees are fully acceptable. They state that there are no ‘red flags’ on any of our dogs. AKC requires a minimum of 100 USA households for a club to be considered for further processing by AKC. As of December 29, 2001, we had 68 households. A household is defined as a separate address for each listed person. If two persons at one household are both SVCA members, only one can be counted as a household. As of the close of the year, we had 82 members but only 68 households. AKC has told us that they are encouraged by our progress and that they do want to work with us towards our goal of achieving AKC status for our wonderful breed. However, we need to meet their minimum requirements. If you know of a former SVCA member whose membership has lapsed or you know of someone who has a Swedish Vallhund and is not a member, or someone who is interested in our wonderful dog and our club, please encourage them to contact the club for information regarding club membership. You best can explain how important it is to have members to support our breed and you can share the quality newsletter which is sent to members four times a year. We do need our members to talk about both our breed and our club and to encourage others to join us. Currently our membership chairperson is Bonnie Conner, 989-8328072, bkc1946@aol.com. Thank you.
From: Gail Smyka, SVCA Secretary Re: updated report on affairs of the Swedish Vallhund Club of America, 2001 December 29, 2001 As of December 29, 2001, we currently have 77 USA members of the Swedish Vallhund Club of America. Of these members, we have 68 USA households. These households are distributed in 31 states of the Union. The accompanying map shows this distribution. As AKC-FSS currently handles our registry, we do not have an up to date distribution of dogs in each state of the USA. We are currently working on reviewing and revising our current constitution and bylaws. We realize that these must again be reviewed and revised in accordance with AKC procedures. We have further developed our committees and are hopeful that this year will see a substantial increase in SVCA households. – Education: The interest in our little Viking Dog is growing. In this quarter alone there were 16 calls for information on the Swedish Vallhund, 14 packets sent through the mail, and 28 email inquiries. – Website: Our website has posted about 3100 hits for this quarter. – Judges Education: Our judges committee has had discussions about what type of materials to include and at least one judges’ presentation was made this year. – Newsletter: The editor has assistants to help her and 4 issues were sent this year. – Membership: A new membership chairperson was installed and ideas for welcoming new members are being addressed. – Rescue: This committee has been active and has worked in placing some rescued SV’s. Work is being done to disseminate Rescue information on a wider basis. – Archive/Historian: This is a new committee and work is being done to preserve both photos and historical information. Our Registrar is also active in helping with the worldwide database on SV’s. – Awards Committee: This is a new committee set up to define awards within the Club itself. – Show Committee: This committee has been quite active in defining policy and working with specialty and regional coordinators. Our 2001 National Specialty had 35 dogs taking part in activities and we hope to increase participation in our 2002 National Specialty. Our Club is just finishing its second election process. AKC will be notified of the new officers and board members once the process is completed. All in all, this has been a year of growth and learning for our club. We continue to strive to produce Swedish Vallhunds that are true to the Standard. We continue to work to protect, preserve, and promote this wonderful breed. We continue to state our desire to participate fully with the AKC and strive to achieve full AKC recognition of our Breed, The Swedish Vallhund. If there is anything else we can do to help achieve this end, please advise us. Thank you.
