AKC Recognition Updates
6/00

Where are we now?

Working toward AKC recognition

by Gail Smyka, SVCA Secretary

We are currently one of 44 AKC-FSS registered Breeds. Each of you
who has a SV has received your AKC-FSS certificate. We must now
purchase all certificates and pedigrees from AKC-FSS, not from the
SVCA. The contact person for any information and forms is:

Elaine Dorwart
Director FSS
919_854-0178
MED@akc.org

As stated in our Constitution and Bylaws, the rules of the AKC govern
us. Our long term quest is to achieve AKC recognition as one means of
promoting and preserving our wonderful breed.

To that end, this is the updated information the Club has recently
gathered from and for AKC:

AKC now requires applicant clubs’ to go through a review process
concerning their constitution, standard, bylaws, and other requirements
prior to acceptance into the Miscellaneous Category of AKC. AKC
states that the Miscellaneous Category is a state in which clubs already
meet most of the actual AKC requirements. These clubs then have a
period to acclimate to all the AKC rules and guidelines before moving
to full AKC breed recognition. Although we are close to meeting the
minimum AKC requirement of 100 USA households and 300 dogs, the
SVCA has not yet begun the process of having the AKC review their
official documents. We have made this request to AKC and await their
review and decision on our moving forward. The SVCA Secretary
continues to keep AKC appraised of developments within our Club.
The Secretary is now working on some statistical analysis, going back
several years, which AKC has suggested. This analysis will include
looking at the growth of members, numbers of dogs, and litters from
year to year.

As of May 1, 2000, we have 85 USA households and 312 USA SV’s
registered with the FSS. The table below shows the number of dogs and members in each state. It lists the puppies born in 12/99 (CT, GA, MA)
and 2000 (TX, MI), as in their home/kennel states. Currently, we do
not have full information where these puppies live.

In doing an analysis of our membership database and our SV database, it
has been interesting to note that we have 176 owners of SV’s in the USA.
Of these, 50 Vallhund owners have more than one SV. That means that
about 29% of us feel that, like a certain potato chip, you can’t have just
one. Hearing from some of these owners would be fun. How is life
different with more than one Val running your home?

In the February Issue of the AKC Gazette, it stated:

"The (AKC)Board of Directors approved the concept of breed and
performance competition for Foundation Stock Service breeds, which
meet certain criteria. The specifics are being developed and it is
anticipated that they will be implemented in 2001."

This proposal would allow the chosen FSS breeds to compete in a
separate class at AKC shows and to participate in regular agility and
obedience competitions. The SVCA will be in contact with the AKC
regarding developments in this arena and will advise the membership
when we receive information.

The SVCA wants to ask for our breeders’ help in continuing to gather our
club’s information on new Vallhunds in the USA. While breeders now
register their litters with AKC-FSS, we ask that you also contact our
Registrar, Cindy Kingsley and give her information on your dogs. Owners
must do an individual registration with AKC-FSS of new Vallhunds
imported into the USA after 12/31/99. If you import a SV, please contact
the Registrar to also supply her with the information. We know that this
makes a bit more work for breeders and owners of newly imported SV’s; however, having this information to keep up the international SV
database and our database for analysis is important for us.
