AKC Update 12/9/03
AKC Report: December, 2003 SVCA Members: Below is the report sent to AKC in December, 2003. In checking with AKC, it appears that historically new breeds are entered into MISC class in January and July. We would not be eligible until our Constitution/Bylaws/Standard are reviewed and accepted by AKC and voted on and approved by SVCA Membership. AKC is currently in the process of reviewing these documents. This does not impact the AKC’s ruling allowing certain FSS breeds, including the SV, for competition in AKC Companion Events (Obedience, Tracking, and Agility), effective January 1, 2004. Please check the AKC website for information regarding this. http://www.akc.org. SVCA Member Numbers by State: December, 2003
Susan Gray December 7, 2003 Dear Ms. Gray, The following is submitted as our update of Club, membership and households as well as events. In September, 2003, our Club held elections. All four board positions as well as all four officer positions were up for election. From this year forward, board positions shall be a two year position with two positions rotating for elections each year. The new SVCA Board of Directors is as listed below: President: Rose Martino, MD Our Club, The Swedish Vallhund Club of America, has continued to grow from July, 2003 to now. In July, 2003, we had 122 USA Households, 129 USA members in 36 states. As of December, 2003, we have 124 USA Households, 134 USA members in 38 states. Worldwide, we have 145 members. Enclosed are the maps required by AKC regarding this information as well as updated lists of members and households. As of July, 2003, we knew there were 422 Swedish Vallhunds with three degree pedigrees, and no red flags, per AKC/FSS, registered with FSS. These were distributed in at least 42 states. As of December, 2003, there have been at least 6 litters born since 7/03, with at least an additional 15 pups to be registered. This does not include the imports we have received since July: at least 3. FSS would have the exact numbers. Our Constitution, Bylaws and Standard are being reviewed by appointed AKC personnel. Once their findings are completed, we will submit any changes to our membership for consideration and vote. On October 24, 25, 2003, the SVCA held its Independent Specialty. The enclosed, updated events form will include this show. The SVCA Specialty included: conformation, in accordance with AKC protocols/guidelines; herding, agility and obedience trials. In total, we had forty Swedish Vallhunds participate in Specialty Events, 21 Males & 19 Females. Mr. Phillip Lanard III, an AKC judge, was our conformation Judge. The Specialty Event was open to the Public and information re: the SV was available. Ms. Rose Martino also made a presentation to judges re: the SV. Our membership has now been alerted to advise the Club whenever they present general public education information on the SV. We will state these in subsequent reports to AKC. Our Regional Contact Persons, formed in 2003, and our Education Committee have been active in handling queries re: the SV and directing interested persons to the proper resource. Our website continues to be actively visited (http://www.swedishvallhund.org) and has garnered about 4700 additional hits since mid 7/03 to show 34700 hits at this time. There have been approximately 25 requests for SV information from the website since July. We are working to have more materials available to present to inquiring judges. This will be more efficiently accomplished once the standard is reviewed and accepted by the appointed AKC personnel and changes voted on by SVCA Membership. We have enclosed our board and general membership meeting minutes to keep our file up to date. Also enclosed are our revised policies: Show; Breeders’ List; General Policies; Historian-Archive. The Swedish Vallhund Club of America continues to be dedicated to promoting, preserving and protecting our wonderful Swedish Vallhund. We look forward with anticipation and dedication to any further work we may need to do to work towards full recognition with the American Kennel Club, which is a major goal for us.
Respectfully,
Gail M. Smyka
