AKC Update 7/16/03

To SVCA Members:

Elaine Dorwart of the AKC contacted the SVCA on 6/10/03. She requested specific information which was gathered. The SVCA Board was notified and has helped in gathering information. Ms. Kerstin Ottmar has been very helpful in submitting facts about the early organization of our club to be included in this packet. Two of Ms. Dorwart's staff persons  will be in contact with Mary Bennett (constitution/bylaws) and Rose Martino (standard), to review these documents and ensure they are in AKC format and technical terminology. When these reviews are completed  to the AKC staff's satisfaction and newly requested information sent to Ms. Dorwart, our club packet will be given to the New Club Committee to the AKC Board for review. The MINIMUM time for review is two months AFTER they receive our packet. This committee will make a recommendation as to whether they feel we are ready to move to MISC class or need to complete other work prior to such a recommendation to the AKC Board. This committee's recommendation will go to the full AKC Board for a vote. The AKC Board will put it on the agenda and decide when they will vote on it.

In July, 2003,  The AKC Board approved the participation of some FSS breeds, including the SV in certain Performance events as of 1/1/04. Minutes of their board meetings are posted on the AKC site. http://www.akc.org

Although our club cannot have an AKC delegate until we are fully recognized by AKC, Delegate minutes from other clubs are also posted on the AKC website.

At this time, we again ask that no members contact AKC regarding the SVCA's and Swedish Vallhund's process of recognition in AKC. Our SVCA contact person will notify our board and post notices to both website and newsletter when new  information is received.

In early July, the SVCA learned that Elaine Dorwart was no longer with AKC. Our new contact person at AKC is Susan Grey, Director of Special Services.

As a response to specific requests from AKC on 6/10/03, the following information was forwarded to AKC.

Susan Grey
American Kennel Club
Director of Special Services
5580 Centerview Drive, Suite 200
Raleigh, NC 27606_3390

July 12, 2003

Dear Ms. Grey,

The following is submitted as a result of a discussion with Elaine Dorwart of AKC on June 10, 2003. Please find here a history of our club and a listing of education and presentation events. Attached is a form indicating information about each of our club’s major dog events. Thorough breakdowns of membership/household numbers and state-distribution of members and SV’s as well as current information on our club and committees is contained in our latest report to AKC of March, 2003. We shall soon be submitting an updated membership/household list. As of July 1, 2003, our database shows 122 USA Households; 129 USA members in 36 states. As of May 31, 2003, there are 422 Swedish Vallhunds with three degree pedigrees, and no red flags, per AKC/FSS, registered with FSS. These are distributed in at least 42 states.

On July 23, 2003, we provided contact information to Elaine Dorwart and staff persons, Mr. Michael Liosis and Ms.Mari-Beth O’Neill in regards to SVCA documents. The contacts are:

SVCA Constitution/Bylaws : Mary Bennett 910-3245729 graadtre_mab@yahoo.com

SVCA Standard: Rose Martino 410-9875233 fromar@aol.com

Per a letter received from AKC dated June 10, 1993, the AKC staff would work with our contacts to ensure that these documents are up to par for AKC. Once this was done, our entire package would be submitted to an AKC Board of Directors Committee for New Clubs for review and recommendation to the full AKC Board.

The Swedish Vallhund is currently recognized in the United States by the United Kennel Club and the American Rare Breed Association, as well as in a number of smaller dog clubs. In Canada, the SV is recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club. The SV is recognized by The Fédération Cynologique Internationale, European Countries following the FCI standard. This includes The Kennel Club of Great Britain; the Australian Kennel Club; the Scandinavian Kennel Club, and KUSA, as well as other countries.

The Swedish Vallhund Club of America is dedicated to promoting, preserving and protecting our wonderful Swedish Vallhund. We look forward with anticipation and dedication to any further work we may need to do to work towards full recognition with the American Kennel Club, which is a major goal for us.

We look forward to establishing a good working relationship with you. We appreciate your working with our club in our desire to achieve AKC recognition for our club and our breed, the Swedish Vallhund.

Also, to keep AKC up to date, due to a vacancy in the position of secretary, the SVCA Board appointed Gail Smyka to fill this position on July 5, 2003.

Respectfully,

Gail Smyka

History of the Club

This Swedish Vallhund Club was founded in 1987 by Mrs. Marilyn Thell of Jonricker Kennels, Connecticut. When this Club was initially developed it was known as the Swedish Vallhund Enthusiastic of America (SVEA). Work was done to develop Club documents in 1988. In 1994, the Club name was changed to Swedish Vallhund Club of America (SVCA) to more descriptively reflect a club status and the geographic distribution of the Club. Mrs. Thell remained president through 1996, when she became President Emeritus.

At the Club’s meeting in the Detroit, MI area in 1997, after the specialty, a vote was taken. At the time there were sixteen(16) members in the Club and twelve(12) members present at the meeting. There was no proxy voting. The group voted to: 1) send SVCA registry in to AKC/FSS (American Kennel Club/Foundation Stock Service) and 2) begin process of achieving recognition for the SVCA and the Swedish Vallhund by AKC. The vote was nine (9) for and three(3) against.

During the next months, the Club experienced a delay in gathering the required information for application to AKC/FSS. The SVCA was then reorganized in 1998 specifically with the goals of sending the SVCA registry to AKC-FSS and applying for the process of AKC recognition as well as continuing the growth of the Club and the protection, preservation and promotion of the breed. Written information passed on to the reorganized Club indicated 13 members in early 1998. At the SVCA Specialty (Independent) of 1998, we had 42 registered members. Ten members were present at the General Meeting. All ten voted in the affirmative to proceed both with AKC/FSS and the AKC recognition process. Work was then completed to produce major documents: constitution, bylaws, standard, code of ethics, and major policies and have these reviewed by members as well as to proceed to vote on some.

The SVCA sent the official request to apply for AKC/FSS and to formally request to begin the process of AKC recognition to AKC on August 25, 1998. By December, 1998, all Club members participated in a ballot to accept/deny the Constitution, Bylaws, Code of Ethics, and SV Standard of the SVCA. The Constitution and Bylaws were set up to fully incorporate our Club’s future belonging to AKC and allowed the members to vote on this. The Constitution specifically stated "The SVCA will be governed by the rules and regulations of the American Kennel Club (hereinafter referred to as AKC)." The Bylaws stated: "The prospective member agrees to abide by the SVCA’s Constitution, By-Laws and Code of Ethics and the rules of the AKC." The Standard was formatted in accordance with the training pamphlets supplied by AKC. At the time, the SVCA had 44 members. Thirty return ballots were received. The results were that the Constitution, which showed our goal to fully affiliate with the AKC, was passed twenty-eight (28) to two (2). The Bylaws passed twenty-seven (27) to three (3).

The SVCA officially submitted its registry to AKC/FSS on December 30, 1999, with 292 SV’s. The registry was accepted by AKC/FSS.

On October 11, 2000, the Swedish Vallhund Club of America became incorporated in the state of Delaware.

Presentations:

The Club is becoming more active in getting information and education about the SV to the public. We have also become more active in the Judge Education and formal presentation arena.

General Public Education

Members have been active in having a picture board and the SVCA’s information packet ( see education section in last report 3/03) for public display and discussion. A number of members have presented official SVCA and Swedish Vallhund information to their Dog Clubs and Pet Fairs over the past years; however, at the time, we did not have a reporting mechanism in place.

In 2002, two members, Pam Abrath and Yvonne Slusser set up a table at both Pet Fairs and ‘Meet the Breed’ events in Wisconsin.

In 2002, another member, Darlene Sjoberg, presented the same to her Duluth, MN dog Club and another to her dog Club in Colorado.

In 2002 and 2003, the SVCA’s information packet was passed out at both days of the Detroit Kennel Club Bench Show, MI, by Gail Smyka.

In 2003, a member, Darlene Sjoberg, presented the SV and the SVCA information packet at the Duluth Kennel Club and at a herding event in Scandia, MN.

In 2003, a member, Colleen Horn, presented the SV and the SVCA information packet at her dog club in Cincinnati, OH.

Each member is given a copyable brochure from the SVCA to pass out to interested parties. This contains Club and breed information as well as the SVCA Swedish Vallhund Standard.

In 2003, a system of Regional Contact Persons was set up by the SVCA. There are four contact persons across the USA. These persons have complete copies of the SVCA information packet and the new composite SV picture from the SVCA Education Committee for distribution.

Work is being done to prepare more information and make more public contacts at both events and with magazines to promote the breed.

Our Club website has been in existence since 1998 and is consistently updated. We have had over 30,000 visits in this time. Many persons request information from the club site…either by phone, email or regular mail. Since 1998, there have been over 700 requests for information on the Swedish Vallhund through these venues.

Formal Presentations, including Judge Presentation

Work is being done to expand this area. To date, Rose Martino has done the formal presentations.

July, 2001: Texas Dog Association, Judges Symposium, Houston, TX

August, 2001: Presentation to three visiting Swedish Judges in Topsfield, MA. Exchange of discussion re: standards, SV temperament and structure.

June, 2002: Presentation of Standard, SV temperament and structure to meeting at National Specialty, Kalamazoo, MI.

Future Work:

The SVCA is committed to future growth in its club and continued work to preserve, protect and promote the Swedish Vallhund. It is anticipated that more events will be set up both for the SV and members as well as the general public and more formal presentations. The SVCA Board is looking towards future national specialties being independent events of the SVCA and looks forward with anticipation to our becoming a part of the AKC.
